Even though I can’t endorse brands, I’ve been enjoying the good results of a wipe-on glossy urethane varnish. It comes in a spray on too. It is thin enough to wick into the veneer’s grain pores and seal with the 1st coat. It’s just thick enough to add 4 more coats to fill the grain texture to achieve a nice, level finish.
Use a lint-free cloth for the wipe on. Use 1500 grit sandpaper on a flat sanding block or #0000 steel very lightly in between coats, after 24 hours drying time.
